Today I came across goats playing on a trampoline while I was driving around and it was the happiest thing I’ve ever seen.

I had some students today who were aggressively uninterested in my class, before my class had even begun. I hadn’t even said good morning yet.

Bad class. Bad day. Bad bad.

But this made me feel better!

I just want an entire movie that’s nothing but Kristen Stewart being lethargically annoyed by men for the first two acts, and then spending the third committing acts of brutal, bored violence. Does that exist? I want to see it.

I’m not talking a ‘roaring rampage of revenge,’ something simpler. Something like a ‘be gone from my sight or your death will be swift and bloody.’

It can be a fantasy-epic if you like, I don’t really mind about the details, as long as she can pause mid-fight to tell someone how unimpressed she is with him. I want to hear her describe something as “tiresome.” I want to hear her say that something else “will do.”

“Want the chainsaw?”

*deep sigh* “Not really. But it’ll do. But only because there are so many of them.”

Okay, yes. Make it so.

No, this is a variation on a circle parry and a counter circle parry. Both are commonly taught in French and Italian style foil fencing.

A circle parry is when you avoid your opponents blade by moving your blade around theirs in a circle. A counter circle parry is circling around your opponents circle so that they can’t get their blade past to stab you.

When two fencers know each other well, this often happens. It becomes a game of chicken, it only ends when someone is willing to risk leaving an opening so that they can launch a different attack.

The foil version of this happens at least once a practice on my college fencing team. The only difference is that the blades are horizontal rather than diagonal.

There was a time when I was twelve or thirteen years old that I discovered on Cartoon Network, the television channel that had, from some points of view, raised me, an after-school slot called “Toonami.” On this slot was some show about kids flying around in giant robots. That show changed everything.

I came for the giant robots, I stayed for the characters and the (at times heavy handed) thematic explorations of morality in warfare, of forgiveness and wrath, of purpose and purposeless.

I was already aware of this idea of a single human life being a precious thing, but that this is frequently forgotten, especially during times of war. I’d learned a little about the First World War, for example, in History class. But I was a kid, and this had space battles, which is a valuable resource. Doing horrible things is one thing. Living with yourself afterwards is another.

James Bond movies were an important part of my childhood too. James Bond never had to deal with guilt or shame, or with the complicated feelings like frustration or powerlessness in place of the flush of victory. When I played, when I told stories, now, I wanted characters who still felt at least a little like they’d failed, even after the ultimate completion of everything they’d set out to do.

I was also fascinated by this idea of a group of people fighting for civilised society, fighting for peace, in full knowledge that they were incapable of functioning in such a place, if such a place could ever exist again. That was basically the coolest idea in the world for characters in a story when I was young, and it’s probably still in the top five, even now.

When revisiting the show as an adult, I’ve come to terms with its deep, deep flaws; the dialogue is terrible, the characters are a lot flatter and less interesting than they had grown in my imagination and memory, there’s a jarring inconsistency of pacing, with an awful lot of nothing going on in several episodes, and one of the heroes’ misogyny is blatant to the point that I’m surprised I missed it, even as a sheltered preteen. But none of this dampens the effect that the show, as a whole, had on me. While I have grown to enjoy and fixate on other themes in my reading, rp, and writing, there a lot that can be traced back 10+ years to here.

And also? That soundtrack. There isn’t much that brings on my nostalgia faster!

The active aggression narrative conveys intent. It implies that things are more dangerous, more violent, more malicious or simply more scary based on the addition of race. For example, “A Black guy cut in front of me” taps into an ingrained visual of the “Big angry Black man.” It implies a reaction. You’ll see this in many a retelling of stories but you’ll especially see it when there was some sort of reaction from the story teller. The addition of race, implies that things were scarier than they would be if it were anyone else. Your reaction to this “Black guy” cutting in front of you in line, no matter your reaction, was just and perfectly acceptable because look what you were faced with. You yelled at him? Wow! You are so brave. You hit him? My goodness, you survived something traumatizing Or perhaps what we’re seeing more likely to happen these days…You shot him? Well, he clearly had it coming. Sounds like he was a thug.

The active aggression narrative is associated with an action because that conveys intent. It places a visual of big, angry, mad…but you survived.

Over the next week, pay attention to when the use of race is used to describe someone. Don’t discuss it. Just pay attention. When is race brought into a story or conversation?
